The River 4

January the 7th, 9 a.m., 20 degrees below zero (minus 4 F) and I am running to the River. Perhaps, I have some experience of Christmas swimming now and I can share it with others. Here are some ideas:

  1. You have to be a believer.
  2. You have to be mature (considering your body and soul). I am 50 years old.
  3. You have to start swimming in summer and continue it regularly through the year.
  4. You have to do it in the morning when your body is full of special energy.
  5. You have to run to the water and back.
  6. You have to wear warm loose cloths without many zippers and buttons (you could manage to put them on easily and quickly).
  7. When you go out of the water stand on a dry towel and rub your body.
  8. Protect your body (especially fingers and toes) from any moisture.
  9. You have to LOVE it.

Well, the river is under thick ice everywhere except some tiny patches where I can stand only without any dipping. All right, I quickly rinse the face and the body and start dressing. Dressing is the longest procedure because I have to stop it several times to warm my fingers. Way home is brilliant as usual…
